Think of the Algarve in Southern Portugal and most people think of its endless beaches and fabulous climate, which is mild in winter and yet cooled by sea breezes in the heat of summer.
However there is much more to the Algarve than just sun and sea. It has a unique charm which derives from the warmth of its people, its Moorish influence and the rich diversity of its majestic landscapes.
Portugal’s beautiful coastlines are characterised by miles of superb sandy beaches, pretty fishing villages with winding narrow streets and some of Europe’s best golf courses. Further inland you will find idyllic white-washed Moorish towns that shimmer in the sunlight over olive and orange groves and brightly coloured, verdant hillsides.
The area is home to some of Europe’s most established luxuryresorts which have excellent facilities and settings. A haven for sports enthusiasts, you can enjoy all manner of activities from golfing on the championship golf courses to sailing, surfing and water-skiing to a day at the world class tennis clubs. If you want to take some time out to enjoy some Portuguese culture you will find it in abundance in the pretty town of Tavira with its Roman Bridge or Lagos with a historic centre surrounded by 14th century walls.
Head further north to Lisbon, a vibrant and welcoming city with a vast amount of culture to experience. Tucked away from the main Atlantic coast line, it enjoys a temperate climate and is home to some beautiful hotels.

Customer rating:

Hotel has great a location adjacent to the Villamoura Marina so ideal for evening walks and local restaurants.
All staff at the resort very helpful and ready with a smile. Reception and restaurant staff very accommodating and professional.
Pool staff were excellent....and a source of local knowledge.
Breakfast - good selection and very fresh.
Bedrooms are a good size with en-suite adequately furnished. Maid service excellent. One small gripe is that there is no tea/coffee or kettle provided in the rooms...
Although rated as a luxury 5* the hotel is showing signs of age in places and hope that the management and owners (Blue/Green) invest some capital in re-furnishing and updating certain areas. Pool changing rooms/toilets do require modernisation and re-decorating at the least.
Pool areas kept clean and the sand edged pool a magnet to children with a gentle slope making this a very safe environment.
Spa area and treatments recommended although relatively pricey.
Kids club whilst there wasn't enticing for my 4 yr old and they could improve this service considerably. ( My view and not everyones no doubt).
This 5* resort does have space to accomodate even when full. Pool area has wonderful views across the lagoon.
If you have stayed at 5* plus resorts in Asia and the Far East please do not expect the same service or hotel rating level within Europe. This hotel does not provide free water, fruit sorbets or cold flannels around the pool areas.
Would I stay again....Yes.

Luxury hotel in a lovely setting. Short 10 mins walk to marina. Staff could not do enough for you. Attention to detail made a difference eg bean bags for the kids to sit in the shade, abundance of cushions for the sunbeds. The pool with the sand edge was fantastic especially for todlers. Rooms were well thought out with lots of storage and the bathroom with its wet room enclosure was so relaxing and again lots of storage space. We ate lunch most days and it was quickly served and very tasty. We only had one meal in the nostrum restaurant (on our last night) and regretted not eating there before as it was really top class food and superbly presented. Only down side was the fact you had to pay for the kids club and it was quite expensive. Our kids were happy round the pool so we did not have to cross that bridge.

Good points
- the hotel was very well situated
- good facilities
- the rooms were good
-the children really enjoyed kids club although it was geared up to younger children rather than up to age 12 as advertised
- the staff were friendly and helpful
Points to improve
- we had a problem with our bathroom flooding and we had to ask 3 times before it was properly resolved
- the hotel's policy was that you should not pre-book sunbeds however, no-one adhered to this and some days beds that people had booked by leaving towels/possessions were unoccupied for a large part of the day. the pool staff did nothing about this issue. they should really strictly enforce their policy.

The location was lovely with a quick transfer from the airport. The hotel was stunning and the facilites were fanatastic - with a 6 and 4 year old, there was plenty to do and the kids loved the pool with the sand. The kids club was the best we have ever come across andt he staff ware fantastic. The staff around the pool and the pool bar were friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The two bedroom apartment was a little disappointing - not as luxurious as I expected and a bit more like 4* accomodation. I think I would have prefered to stay in the hotel accomodation. There was alot of activites out of the hotel for the kids to do which were a taxi ride away. All in all a fantastic holiday and I would definitely go back.

Great location, lovely hotel. Service was fantastic. Only downside was the price of drinks and ice lollies at the pool bar, approx 3 times more than at local bars.

Yes we had a lovely holiday and enjoyed this resort very much. Jet 2 were a delight to travel with, with plenty of leg room etc. Hotel transfers very good. Staff very friendly and willing to please.Unfortunately we were given wrong apartment, marina view instead of pool view however they did manage to move us later on arrival day. We were glad that we had not opted to go halfboard as we would have been dissapointed with choices available to us and even the standard of service relative to restaurants such as Don alfonso in Vilamoua itself. Only one restuarant was operating at one point in our holiday due to refurbishment of one. Yes we would go back but would want to make sure that we had pool view and assured of no hiccups with reservation.

A lovely luxury hotel. It's ideally-located near the upmarket Vilamoura marina with its shops and restaurants, and close to the Vilamoura Blue Flag beach, yet within the Lake Spa Hotel you are a world away from the hustle and bustle outside. Families have an excellent children's club, there are three lovely pools, one with an amazing artificial sand beach, and all located in an idyllic ecological lakeside setting, and all facilities are of the highest quality. The food is excellent, too, and the staff are wonderful. We had a most relaxing stay.

Customer rating:

Fabulous hotel and perfect location. Everything about the place is 5* from the rooms, the quality of the food, the amenities, the spa and the wonderfully helpful staff. The Marina is less than 5 minutes walk away with lots of lovely restaurants and bars and the beautiful beach is 5 minutes in the opposite direction. One thing I would say thought, is check there are no national holidays they week you intend to go. The week before we arrived the hotel was full as there were 3 Portuguese holidays, the week we were there I would say the hotel was about 40% occupied and it was perfect. Will definitely be returning next year and I would highly recommend this hotel (the spa is to die for!)

Superb hotel. Could not be faulted. Everything was absolutely perfect, from the staff (who couldnt do enough for you), the bedrooms (comfortable huge beds), the facilities (especially the Spa, the sunbathing beds and the food.

Excellent hotel, mighty impressed on arrival, location is perfect for Faro airpot, marina and local beach. Service was very friendly.. especially on looking after interests of the toddlers we have. Apartment was spacious and well maintained ( top balcony). For a family with young children you can't get much better than the sand pool.. safe, warm and clean. All you would expect from a 5* hotel with a couple of unexpected positive twists. We'll be going back!

Customer rating:

We enjoyed the hotel very much. The staff were super friendly and helpful. The location was excellent and our apartment overlooked the marina which was a wonderful view. The marina is an enjoyable 10 minute walk from the hotel. Our apartment was nicely presented although not as luxurious as we thought it would be. The photo's on the websites were obviously showing their 'best' rooms and apartments. We also struggled only having a one bed apartment and wished we now had a 2 bed. We were happy with the babysitting service and highly recommend this to give you a chance to have an evening out in peace. We hired the same lady twice which was nice to do.There was one problem which was letting the hotel down and that was the lack of easy access for pushchairs and wheelchairs. We had to negotiate lots of steps whenever we wanted to go to the main reception and into the breakfast/restaurant area. On the whole i would give the hotel a 4 star rating rather than a 5 star which 'fits' the advertising you see on the website etc.. We would certainly stay there again for another holiday though.

We recently stayed in The Lake Spa Resort - Portugal. On arrival our greeting and welcome from Reception was excellent. We arrived early at 10.30.a.m. and our room was ready. I asked at Receiption if I could have an iron and ironing board and within 5 minutes it was in the room for the next 10 days. We were lucky to have been upgraded to a room above the spa area with a balustrade and large balcony with a wicker settee, table and chairs plus an umberella. It was one of the few with a decent balcony, other balconies are all tiny that is one drawback. The site is very impressive and the sand pool was great. We only went to the sea on the first day as although it is only across the road from the hotel with the lake in the middle you have to walk all the way round, so we stayed at the sand pool. Buffet breakfast was excellent, fresh omlettes, poached and fried eggs cooked to order. Snack menu at both the pool bar, and floating restaurant were the same and a little limited when you are eating there every day. After the excellent Buffet breakfast all you need is a nice selection of lighter options, without chips. We did not eat in the Fusion restaurant as nothing really appealed to us, but we did eat in the Floating Restaurant twice which was a lovely setting, service was good, food ok not exceptional for the price. We took bikes out from the Hotel a couple of days and saw a lot more of Vilamoura than we would have done, it is 2 minutes biking and 5 mins walking to the Marina. The Marina has lots of Restaurants & bars with enough choices for a change from the hotel, and a nice after dinner walk. A Hotel of this calibre normally has more than one bar on offer and with something going on most evenings especially in the high season, there was no entertainment apart from a Pianist for a few hours on each of the Friday and Saturday evenings we were there. My Husband was rather astonished that a 5* hotel did not have the Licence to exchange money which we had not been made aware of, and caused us a little problem as the exchange at the far end of the Marina was closed. I think they should possibly apply for the appropriate licence.I read in a review before we went that Staff was a problem. Well they seem to have sorted that out as all the staff were excellent, attentive and polite. Overall opinion was that we really enjoyed it and the above is just a few minor points that as a Travel Company you may find constructive. We would like to returned to the Lake Spa Resort, although a little expensive. I must also comment that my past two dealings in April and July with yourselves has been excellent and you will be our first point of call for our next holiday.

A great hotel with excellent service. All the employees were convivial helpful and polite. Disabled facilities were good except the pool which had no grab rails to hold onto.

Customer rating:

Overall, we did think it was fabulous. The only comment I would make is that it was pricey to eat at lunchtimes, even in the snack bar - an average lunch for 5 of us could easily cost £75 which I thought was quite high. The 2 bed apartment was very roomy and serviced daily and the treatments at the spa were out of this world. I can recomment the 'hot stones' for anyone next time you go. Its position by the Marina was very convenient, and we enjoyed the fact that it wasn't overcrowded. We would definitely go again.
