This beautiful 500 acre resort (managed by Ritz Carlton) resides in lush Portuguese hills offering a haven of tranquility and a Mecca for sports enthusiasts.

Nature prevails at this peaceful retreat in Sintra, a designated World Heritage site. However you need never be bored with an array of activities from a 27-hole championship golf course (one of the highest rated in Europe) to numerous tennis courts, squash, jogging, bicycle tracks and horseback riding.

Rooms are contemporary but lushly decorated with luxuriant brocades and rich colour schemes. Views are spectacular from the high vantage point and every room sports the very latest technology.

The stunning Six Senses Spa spans 1,500m2 and comes complete with 9 treatment rooms, a garden with a Jacuzzi, yoga platform and 2 meditation gazebos. In addition there’s a health club with a gym featuring state of the art equipment.

Dining choices are excellent from the top Japanese restaurant Midori and the casual Serra with its fresh seafood to traditional Portuguese with a modern twist at assaMassa.

For children there is a special area dedicated to activities just for them and a brilliant Kids Club program. We especially like the children’s games in the indoor pool, great for off–season entertainment.

Think of the Algarve in Southern Portugal and most people think of its endless beaches and fabulous climate, which is mild in winter and yet cooled by sea breezes in the heat of summer.

However there is much more to the Algarve than just sun and sea. It has a unique charm which derives from the warmth of its people, its Moorish influence and the rich diversity of its majestic landscapes.

Portugal’s beautiful coastlines are characterised by miles of superb sandy beaches, pretty fishing villages with winding narrow streets and some of Europe’s best golf courses. Further inland you will find idyllic white-washed Moorish towns that shimmer in the sunlight over olive and orange groves and brightly coloured, verdant hillsides.

The area is home to some of Europe’s most established luxuryresorts which have excellent facilities and settings. A haven for sports enthusiasts, you can enjoy all manner of activities from golfing on the championship golf courses to sailing, surfing and water-skiing to a day at the world class tennis clubs. If you want to take some time out to enjoy some Portuguese culture you will find it in abundance in the pretty town of Tavira with its Roman Bridge or Lagos with a historic centre surrounded by 14th century walls.

Head further north to Lisbon, a vibrant and welcoming city with a vast amount of culture to experience. Tucked away from the main Atlantic  coast line, it enjoys a temperate climate and is home to some beautiful hotels.

21-September-2011 Penha Longa Jul/Aug
Customer rating: 7

This was our second trip to the Penha Longa. We went in Jul/Aug. Having experienced it for 10days last year we decided to book for 14 nights this time around. We were a little apprehensive as to whether the same level of customer care would be present as this year we were going around the peak time. I can say without any doubt that this is one the the best holiday experiences we have had. The staff are absolutely marvellous. There are just too many good points to try and place them all on this site, but I cannot stress enough how good this hotel is. The photos you see on their web site is what you get. It can be windy but we found this to be pleasant. Lisbon is only 30 mins away. The Oceanario area is worth a visit but I cannot particularly recommend the Oceanrio itself unless your a big fish fan. Lots of palaces to see in and around Sintra. We can recommend Hemingway’s restaurant in the Marina in Cascais. I only have one gripe about the Penha and that is the cost of Wifi. This in my opinion is extortionate. For food/drinks etc I found the hotel reasonable given it is 5 star.

Thanks for the Hotel recommendation and making the bookings. The Hotel was excellent and so were the very helpful staff. We had a great time and enjoyed the envronment. We had a couple of negtaive points, for your information these were : 1. The kids club was far too expensive for what it offered ( €100 per child per day ) 2. The internet service was appaling I won't go into greater detail , but we made our comments to the hotel before we left and also poste don Tripadvisor. We would recommend the Hotel but with the above provisos. Anyway, thanks again and will contact you for our next outing.
